Virajpet - April 08

Today. We wanted to do the survey in the Devarkadu or sacred grove close to a coffee estate. Went to speak to the family that owned the estate - to know how many kilometers of forest was in there and what kind of wildlife we'd find there. The grandfather offered to take us to the forest himself. Theirs was a simple house set amidst fields and plantations. It was simple yet felt so cool and relaxing - small house, neat aangan, lovely flower beds, pepper spread out to dry in the sun. I've often wondered how nice life on a plantation would be. They are probably not very rich but definitely well-to-do - living with natural things close to nature. The lady of the house gave us a cool sherbet after we came back from the walk. It was sweet and refreshing. I will remember that pretty house amid plantations, the cool sherbet and the warm hospitality of this family.

One of the best part of this survey - the part I really enjoy - is the drive in Mahindra Invader, especially the front seat. The rear seat gets bumpy but it's not bad. It is good fun - the winding roads of Coorg with plantations on both sides.
